The Department of Education recently proposed expanding the data reporting requirements associated with the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the agency’s annual survey for colleges and universities that addresses topics such as student financial aid, college cost, and student retention rates. An announcement in the Federal Register discussed the expansion of the IPEDS survey to include several new areas such as institutional systems of student assessment and student aid reporting requirements to develop a more comprehensive way of assessing net tuition price.

The American Council on Education and 39 other higher education associations responded with a letter on March 20 citing the burden and costs campuses face when completing the IPEDS survey. The letter asked that the DOE undertake a comprehensive independent study of the effort required to complete the IPEDS survey (which ACE and other associations believe was grossly underestimated in the Federal Register notice.)

In addition, the Department of Education has called for a series of meetings designed to consider changes to regulations that govern elements of the Higher Education Act. These changes relate to accreditation and the role of accreditors in ensuring that institutions receiving federal student aid are reputable.
