The elections on November 7 gave the Democrats the majority in both the House and Senate. Given this shift, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions will now be chaired by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA), and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce will be chaired by Representative George Miller (D-CA). The House Subcommittee on Education Reform will be chaired by Representative Dale Kildee (D-MI) and Representative Rob Andrews (D-NJ) will chair the House Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness.
It is unlikely that any action will be taken on the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA) until the next session of Congress convenes in January of 2007.
